Al Capone Drank Here: The Rebirth of Templeton Rye
So...I'm not an alcoholic, I swear. Nor do I really "drink" -- only on occasion or to have one or two glasses of wine. The thing that pulled me into this article was OF COURSE the Al Capone reference. WHO WATCHES BOARDWALK EMPIRE?! The whole beginning of the article was on point with the past couple episodes. The banning of liquor, the bootlegging of whiskey, Al Capone's stash in Chicago, the priest "IN" on the whiskey, the HUGE barrel of "cooked" wiskey in the old building... the one Jimmy Edwards was keeping under wraps. NOT FOR LONG, your wife is a lesbian and was just shot... But anyway! That's what pulled me into the article. What I found intriguing was the fact that people actually still "cook" liquor, whiskey, beer, wine, etc at home! I thought that kind of died out in the earlier days, but I guess not. I remember my friend Jess in high school leaving her bag of grapes in her above locker (when we had lockers, they gave us two) and not remembering she kept it in there -- when she opened it up PHEW! It smelled like YEAST and moldy grapes... I don't know if I'd ever drink that. I think I feel better knowing the whole process happened elsewhere. It's like eating something SO delicious, but rather not knowing how it became that way. Anyway, great website. Great insight into all things food -- processes, history, current events, etc! Gluten is a protein found in most foods containing wheat and most grain. Gluten is what forms the "chewy" texture of breads and let's baking dough rise.
Bread flours are high in gluten; pastry flours are lower -- hence the more flaky texture. CELIAC DISEASE autoimmune disease -- reaction to gluten Foods To Avoid Grains and starches allowed in a gluten-free diet include:
- Is gluten-free healthy? Is it considered healthier than foods containing gluten? - Did you know what gluten was until you started to become sick? - How long have you been gluten-free? - When did you find out about your gluten intolerance? - Were you diagnosed with celiac disease? If yes, did you know what it was before you were diagnosed? - Hereditary? - If not diagnosed -- What made you go gluten-free? - What were some symptoms you went through? - What store do you buy groceries at? - Are the prices for gluten-free food higher or the same as wheat-based food? - Do you taste a difference in gluten-free products? - What foods do you CONSTANTLY need to avoid? - Do you ever crave products with gluten? If so, do you indulge knowing the risks? - When going out to eat, where are your favorite gluten-free places? Are there enough, do you think? - What is your favorite gluten-free recipe? - Do you think people are now becoming more aware of gluten? I'm sorry, but Berry's writing doesn't do it for me. It seems so, blah, at all times. Anyway -- after reading "The Pleasure's of Eating" I began thinking about how we are victims when it comes to what we eat and why we eat.
For example, if you ask my mom she will tell you I'm the most picky eater there is -- and I'm definitely NOT. I just don't like FAKE meat, FAKE veggies, FAKE anything. What I mean is when my mom had a long day at work and comes home -- she may throw something in the oven that you can heat up & make. Salisbury steak. WHAT IS THAT?! I don't even want to know. Ground beef - GROSS. Beef isn't meant to be ground. Also, I always look at the Ingredients labeled on the back of things.. a lot of these things are added to "maintain freshness". Don't get me wrong, I like that I'm eating something "fresh" but I'd rather not have all that mumbo jumbo in my system. BUT...I eat it anyway. Why? Because I'm hungry. Hunger can toy with your emotions.. just ask my boyfriend. When I'm hungry, I'm cranky. So, do I run to the local farmers market, produce store, health food store, and buy a bunch of fresh ingredients to make a nice chemical free meal -- or do I run to Acme and get all the stuff I need? The ladder. I'm shaking my head at myself as I type. I agree with Berry when he states that we should support our local farmers -- and I do shop at my local produce junction, Stella's farm (best corn), Rosie's farm, etc -- but we live in New Jersey. It snows, it hails, it rains, etc. What then? Starve? Stock up? -- without the presevatives, will it last? Hmm. All in all, I wish to support local farming -- BUT all the time? Is that a reasonable statement? After reading Collaborative Writing by Fontaine and Hunter, I began to think about how I could use this advice while doing our collaborative project. I believed Chapter 3 to be the best way to describe the differences between collaboration & cooperation. To sum it all up, the cooperation happens when a topic is given and each student in the group divides the work evenly between members. They then go on their own and only write their part, then combine the pieces together in the end. They, as individuals, do not know what the whole piece consists of -- they only know their part. Collaboration happens when the topic is discussed in depth between members, they bounce ideas off of one another so that when they are writing their own pieces, they have the voices of other members in their minds. They write in a group voice-- rather than an individual one.
This is helpful for Diane, Andrea, and I. I think we have a strong collaborative group. We have known eachother's working abilities -- and we all have different views on certain things. I believe that we will be able to write collaboratively. Well, not so much "write" as to develope -- I believe we are sticking to the documentary idea?? Collaboration needs to happen in class on Monday! Food Inc is a documentary that is trying to stress the ins and outs, pros and cons, of the food industry today. The camera goes in where most of us would never have thought to even look. You find out more about today's meat and agriculture production than the average person would want to know about. There is much controversial topics covered. Some major companies even denied producers from recording and/or talking to their employees in fear of their "secrets" getting out. From injecting chickens with chemicals to make them all similar for production, to the reason escherichia coli (e. coli) is effecting us today and how WE made this bacteria -- Food Inc has it covered!

What I thought was that being reflective was having the ability to reflect on the past and change for the better. What I thought being reflexive was having the ability to reflect on the past but also be flexible. You should be able to bend and change due to the results of others.
After reading the article, I don't know where I would fit most. I would like to say that I am reflexive, but to be honest, I really don't believe that. If you asked my boyfriend, he would tell you that I am the most stubborn person anyone will ever come into contact with. Stubbornness sometimes means the inability to change. Hmm. I know that I am more "set in my ways" but I do feel that I change little things on a day to day basis. I would like to think that during my teaching, I am reflexive. I am able to reflect on how the lesson went, and mold it due to the liking and/or understanding of my students. I am influenced by their learning. On the other hand, outside of the classroom -- I will defend my beliefs/ideas until the day I die. I am always right and when I'm not, I will find a reason that supports why I am. So, I could honestly say -- as a person, I am reflective; as a teacher, I am reflexive. I hope everyone understands where I am coming from with the two. I feel my last blogs have been confusing because when my thoughts run, I don't think I just speak. So, after letting the article sink in, I feel that this was my best response. Hmm.... ~ MOVIE INFO ~ ~ NOTES & MY THOUGHTS ~ ~ fake tomatoes ~ I love tomatoes !! :-( ~ no bones in meat ~ gross ~ McDonald Brothers ~ hired workers to do one thing, changed how ground beef is produced -- largest purchasers of beef, potatoes, chicken, apples, tomatos, lettuce ~ Tyson Chicken ~ chicken, same size -- made chickens breasts bigger for more white meat -- "produce food, not chickens" ~ Chicken ~ chickens are caged in nasty houses -- many farmers denied access into the houses -- not right what is going on with chickens -- chickens are born and then become 5 pounds, gross fat with poop everywhere -- antibiotics put into the feed -- latino workers not going to complain ~ Companies keep farmers under their ~ threatened with loss of contract -- no say thumb because of the dept in what they do ~ CAFO -- cows feed corn -- cheap & fat ~ Ecoli -- appears from how cows are raised, created by the way that we feed the cattle, we created a disease that kills us DENIED TO BE ON FILM:
Purdue Tyson Hmm.. this article was not what I was expecting to read. I always thought of Oral History as something completely different then stated in this read. I thought it was someone "speaking" orally about something that happened in history... something not written down, so it was easily changed between generations. Oral History is explained on this site as interviews on different topics complied into research. It is a form of research.
The fact that the site states that Oral History is indeed research boggles me. People lie, a lot. They also change and tweek and bend stories/ questions all of the time. I particularly like the story of the slave being interviewed. It reminded me of something I had to study in American Sign Language Linguistics and Deaf Culture when I was going to Camden County College for Interpreting. In the article, it states that the slave had different answers when speaking to the Caucasion interviewer and the African American interviewer. Though, both answers were said to be correct! The slave would tell the interviewers wanted to hear about, or what she believed that they wanted to hear about. This happened in ASL with the Deaf Community. Deaf people, when interviewed by other Deaf people have a different demeanour about them than they would if being interviewed by a Hearing person. What is meant by this is that if a Deaf person realizes that the interviewer is Hearing, the answers change & also the language for that matter. The Deaf person will begin sigining PSE (Pidgin Signed English) or SEE (Signed Exact English). This change in "language" is called a pidgin. The pidgins are used to balance the languages -- but you'll notice that the Deaf on Deaf interview goes more smoothly and the Deaf person being interviewed seems to reveal more and sign more than they would when being interviewed by the Hearing person. This scares me a bit! When we are going to do out Oral History, I have to make sure to be as neutral as possible with my demeanour and questions asked. I have to be SURE not to sway any answers. |
