I do not understand who she was directing her audience to though. Though, I believe everyone should be proud and strong in their own culture - I believe sometimes adaptation is key. I do give her props because of the fact that she put spanish and english in her work. It's not like she was strictly speaking spanish and being like - READ THIS!
ONCE I laid (layed?) eyes on the first piece, Borderlands, I knew I had seen it before. Can anyone help me out, either Creative Writing with Block OR Writers Mind with Maxson??? I know I read this piece before. I LOVELOVE the way it is written. I can feel the tone, the harshness and softness in her voice. Her tongue cutting the words in spanish as if slicing the stanzas in half. I enjoyed reading this piece about the work Mexicans put in and how sometimes their bosses are just like the one she wrote about. But she's strong. And she overcomes. Just like in the second piece, How to Tame a Wild Tongue. She begins in a dentist chair. I know how she is feeling because I get that remark all of the time. "Keep your tongue down", uhh, sorry. But she goes on to write about her hardships when speaking her native tongue at recess and being repremanded for it. She eventually overcomes her silence but seems to be more involved with language now. She notices more. The slang, the proper, etc. I can identify with her. I, not only, can point out when someone is using incorrect English. I can also point out when someone is Signing Exact English (SEE) or using Pigeon Signed English (PSE) instead of true ASL. It makes you really think, is it lazyness OR are we all adapting to English in someway?
